Years 1 and 2

In Year 1 and Year 2, children continue to be taught through a topic-based approach. Children are encouraged to make connections between areas of learning and their own experiences. A strong focus continues to be placed on Literacy and Numeracy to allow children to develop the key skills required for their ongoing education.

Teaching continues to build on children’s Early Years learning of Letters and Sounds. Year 1 and 2 children read each day to an adult to develop their reading as well as their comprehension skills.

As in Reception, children are taught the majority of their lessons by their class teacher and taught by specialists in some subject areas. This allows teachers to get to know the children within their class well and support them in reaching their full potential. Children are encouraged to work independently and collaboratively within lessons. They develop their confidence and communication skills.  Homework is set on a regular basis to foster independent learning and consolidate areas covered within lessons.
